Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

A key element of the Junior League of Birmingham, MI’s mission is to improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We seek to bring women together to fulfill our Mission and Vision, which is supported through our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

The Junior League welcomes all women who value our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities.

Our League’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is as important as ever. We launched a permanent Diversity and Inclusion Council to help us ask the hard questions and examine how we can model inclusion in everything we do, how we can attract and retain the most diverse group of women leaders, and how we can unpack and tear down our own unconscious biases.

The Junior League of Birmingham will continue to be grounded in an authentic and abiding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and guided by our shared values of respect, service, and leadership. We are catalysts for lasting community change, and our work and attention at this time are desperately needed.

Making a significant and lasting change will take a commitment from all of us. The JLB is a member of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), and one of the benefits of this partnership is the collaboration, collective work, and resources from AJLI and all member leagues. AJLI is working to “ensur[e] that we have clear steps that every League, every member can take.” We will work to share and implement these resources and communicate our actions.

FOCUS

We believe that all women should have equal opportunity, the resources to unlock their potential, and the structures to support them. Of the more than 111,000 individuals living in poverty in Oakland County, nearly 60 percent are women. This impacts their health, home and food security, educational and employment opportunities, and the lives of their children and families.
